It's the classic Northern Pakistan dilemma: you've got one trip's worth of time, and both Hunza and Skardu are calling. Here's an honest, side-by-side comparison to help you decide — without the tourist-brochure fluff.

What is Hunza known for?
Hunza is the postcard of Gilgit-Baltistan: stone villages clinging to terraced slopes, the 900-year-old Baltit and Altit forts above Karimabad, the surreal turquoise of Attabad Lake, the jagged Passu Cones, and the road to the Khunjerab Pass — the highest paved border crossing in the world. It's also famous for apricots, cherries and a famously long-lived population.
If you love culture, gentle walks between villages, and history you can touch, Hunza wins. (See our Hunza Valley & Naltar tour.)
What is Skardu known for?
Skardu trades greenery for sheer scale. This is the launch pad for K2 and the great Karakoram treks, home to the otherworldly Deosai National Park (the second-highest plateau on earth), the Sarfaranga cold desert, the Kachura lakes with the famous Shangrila resort, and the Manthoka waterfall. The landscapes feel bigger, emptier and more raw.
If you're after wilderness, alpine lakes and dramatic, almost lunar scenery, Skardu wins. (See our Skardu & Deosai tour.)
Which is easier — and cheaper — to reach?
Skardu has the edge on access: there are domestic flights from Islamabad (subject to mountain weather), so you can fly in and skip the long drive. Hunza is road-only via Gilgit. By road, both are roughly 1.5–2 days from Islamabad along the Karakoram Highway. Group tours keep costs similar; flying to Skardu costs more but saves two days.
So… which should you choose?
- Choose Hunza if you want culture, forts, fruit orchards and to stand at the China border.
- Choose Skardu if you want raw wilderness, alpine lakes, deserts and trekking.
- Do both if you have 7+ days — they're linked by one of the most beautiful roads on earth.
The honest answer: do both
If your schedule allows, you don't have to choose. Our 8-day Hunza & Skardu grand circuit strings together the best of both — Kachura, Deosai, Karimabad's forts, Attabad and the Khunjerab Pass — in a single, well-paced loop.
