Rush Lake Trek Guide (Nagar, Hunza)

Weekend VikingsJuly 2, 20262 min read

In short

Rush Lake sits at about 4,694 m near Nagar in Hunza — one of the highest alpine lakes on earth. The trek starts at Hopar, crosses the Miar glacier and climbs to Rush Pari peak above the lake over 3–4 days. It's a strenuous high-altitude trek — go July to September with a guide and porters.

For experienced trekkers, Rush Lake is one of the great high-altitude walks in Pakistan — a glacier crossing and a climb to one of the highest alpine lakes in the world, with a panorama of Karakoram giants. Here's what the trek involves.

Where is Rush Lake?

Rush Lake lies in the Nagar Valley of Hunza, above the village of Hopar, at roughly 4,694 metres. It sits beneath Rush Pari peak near the Miar and Barpu glaciers, with views toward Spantik (Golden Peak), Malubiting and the Hunza wall of mountains.

The route

The classic trek begins at Hopar (reached by jeep from Nagar/Hunza):

  1. Hopar → Barpu / Miar glacier. The trek crosses the Miar glacier — a real glacier walk — and climbs onto grassy ablation valleys.
  2. High camp / Phaphlu-style meadows. A night at altitude to acclimatise before the final push.
  3. Rush Lake & Rush Pari. An early climb to the lake and the Rush Pari viewpoint for the big Karakoram panorama, then descent.

It's typically a 3–4 day round trip, done with a guide and porters.

Difficulty & altitude

  • Difficulty: strenuous — glacier crossing, steep ground and thin air.
  • Altitude: the lake is around 4,694 m; acclimatisation matters.
  • Skills: no ropes for the standard route, but real trekking experience and fitness are needed.

Don't underestimate the altitude — go slow, hydrate, and travel with people who know the glacier route.

Best time to go

July to September is the window, when the glacier and high trails are most stable and the meadows are green. Earlier or later, snow and cold turn it into a much more serious undertaking.

What to bring

  • Proper mountaineering-grade boots and trekking poles
  • A four-season sleeping bag and warm layers (nights are freezing at altitude)
  • Sun protection and glacier-worthy sunglasses (glare is intense)
  • Water treatment, snacks and basic first aid
  • A headtorch, power bank and cash — there's nothing beyond Hopar
