Running along the turquoise Neelum River in Azad Kashmir, Neelum Valley is one of Pakistan's greenest and most beloved escapes — terraced villages, forested slopes, waterfalls and meadows, all within easy reach of Islamabad. Here's how to explore it.
Where is Neelum Valley?
Neelum Valley begins at Muzaffarabad (the capital of Azad Kashmir) and follows the Neelum River north-east for around 200 km toward Taobat, near the top of the valley. The river forms part of the frontier, so the far bank is often Indian-administered Kashmir — one reason the scenery feels so dramatic.
Top places to visit
- Keran — a riverside village right on the water, a popular first stop.
- Sharda — a green, central hub with an ancient ruined site and good bases.
- Kel & Arang Kel — Arang Kel is the valley's jewel, a meadow village reached by a short chairlift and hike above Kel.
- Taobat — the last major village, deep and remote at the top of the valley.
- Ratti Gali Lake — a stunning alpine lake reached by jeep and a hike from Dowarian, best in mid-summer.
How to get there
From Islamabad, drive to Muzaffarabad (a few hours), then follow the Neelum Valley road up-river. The lower valley (Keran, Sharda) is straightforward; the upper valley and side trips — Taobat, Ratti Gali — need a jeep and more time. Carry your CNIC/passport, as there are checkpoints along the frontier road.
Best time to visit
May to October is the season. June–August is peak green; the upper valley and Ratti Gali Lake are best in July–August once snow clears. Winter closes the top of the valley.

- 3–4 days: Keran, Sharda and Arang Kel — the classic loop.
- 5+ days: add Taobat or the Ratti Gali Lake trip comfortably.
