Where is the Astore Valley?

The Astore Valley branches south-east off the Karakoram Highway near Jaglot, running up toward the eastern flank of Nanga Parbat and the vast Deosai plateau. It's a region of pine forest, terraced villages and high green pastures — and a back door into Deosai from the Skardu side's opposite end.

Rama Meadows & Rama Lake

The star of a first visit is Rama:

Rama Meadows — a wide alpine pasture ringed by forest, with Nanga Parbat looming behind.
Rama Lake — a glacial lake a short walk/jeep beyond the meadows.

Minimarg (and the permit situation)

Further on, past Chilim and toward the frontier, lies Minimarg — a strikingly green valley near the Line of Control. Because of its sensitive border location, Minimarg usually requires a permit (NOC) and passes through army checkpoints. Rules change from season to season, so this is one to do with a local operator who arranges access and knows the current situation. (Rama, again, needs no permit.)

Getting there

From the Karakoram Highway near Jaglot, take the Astore road to Astore town, then continue by jeep up to Rama. From Astore you can also cross the Deosai plateau toward Sheosar Lake and Skardu — a spectacular high traverse.

Best time to visit

June to September. July and August are the most reliable for green meadows and clear high roads; snow closes the upper routes outside summer.
