The trek to K2 Base Camp and Concordia is a pilgrimage for serious trekkers — a journey up the mighty Baltoro glacier into an amphitheatre ringed by some of the highest mountains on earth. It's hard, remote and unforgettable. Here's what it involves.
The route
The classic trek begins beyond Skardu:
- Skardu → Askole. A long, rough jeep ride to Askole, the last village and trailhead.
- Askole → Paiju. Onto the trail beside the Braldu River toward the snout of the Baltoro glacier.
- Baltoro glacier: Paiju → Urdukas → Goro. Days on the glacier and moraine, with the granite spires of the Trango Towers and Cathedral overhead.
- Concordia. The great glacier junction — the "throne room of the mountain gods" — surrounded by K2, Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums.
- K2 Base Camp. A day trip up the Godwin-Austen glacier to the foot of K2 (8,611 m), then the long return.
How hard is it, and how long?
This is a serious, strenuous expedition trek — not a holiday hike. Expect:
- 14–21 days total (roughly 12–16 on the trail).
- Altitudes above 5,000 m at Concordia and the base camps.
- Long days on glacier and moraine, camping every night.
- Real remoteness — no villages, shops or rescue once you're on the Baltoro.
You don't need to climb, but you need excellent fitness, trekking experience and a full support team of guides, cooks and porters.
Permits & logistics
The trek crosses the Central Karakoram National Park and a sensitive frontier zone, so permits, park fees, guides and porters are mandatory. This is emphatically not a solo or DIY trek — it must be run as an organised expedition.
Best time to go
The Karakoram's trekking window is short: July and August. This is when the high glaciers and weather are most stable. Attempting it outside this window is dangerous.
What it takes
- Top-quality mountaineering boots, sleeping bag and layers for below-freezing nights
- Full glacier and sun protection
- Genuine fitness and prior high-altitude trekking experience
- Time, patience and flexibility for weather
