A bucket-list expedition to the Shandur Polo Festival β held each July on a 3,700m plateau, the highest polo ground in the world, where the historic rivalry between Chitral and Gilgit plays out.
The journey itself is half the adventure: Chitral, the Mastuj valley, the turquoise lakes of Phander, and nights camping on the wild Shandur plateau amid the festivities.
Drive across the Lowari Tunnel into Chitral. Dinner and overnight.
Chitral Fort, bazaar and Tirich Mir views; final supplies for the plateau.
Up the Mastuj valley to the Shandur plateau. Set up camp amid the festival crowds.
A full day of high-altitude free-style polo, music and cultural performances.
The grand final between Chitral and Gilgit, with closing celebrations.
Descend toward the Gilgit side to the lakes and meadows of Phander. Overnight.
Drive down the Gilgit valley and onto the KKH to Chilas.
The final long drive home along the Karakoram Highway.
